Dragon Study

This drawing is one of many preparatory studies produced while developing the Psychomaccia composition. I spent about three years working it out this full-scale model, but in the end followed the form but not the overlying pattern, which was replaced by an intense color colposition.

This drawing was created at the Florence Academy in the summer of 1997. We spent two six hour days on the project. The image was begun as a structure drawing in charcoal and the forms slowly emerged.

This drawing was executed at the Florence Academy in a drawing class focusing on tradition methids. The objective was to practice sight sizing, stuctural analysis, and value judgment techniques.

Executed at the Florence Academy as a technique exercise. The heads are copies of large-scale prints of original drawings by the 16th-century Florentine masters Michelangelo Buonarotti and Andrea del Sarto.

This composition is based on the integration of three old master drawing by Golzius, Rubens and Gericault. First the masters were projected on and traced in graphite. Then the India ink was applied with a dropper and allowed to dry. Charcoal was then rubbed in and more ink appied. Finally the Chinese white was added.

This figure was composed in one hour without a model. It began as a few gestural lines that became the raised knee and from there the figure developed. This drawing is the model for an oil on canvas painting on a much larger scale.
